A range of updates for the 2009 model year, with every model of the three- and   five-door supermini now emitting less than 120g/km of carbon dioxide and   hence in VED Band B - giving an annual road fund licence of £35 for 2008/9.

A new, 1.33-litre (1,329cc) four-cylinder petrol engine develops 100bhp and   features a Stop & Start system that reduces emissions and improves economy   by cutting out when the car is stationary (with the six-speed manual   transmission only). It has an official EU Combined fuel consumption of   55.4mpg, with CO2 emissions of 119g/km.

The 1.0-litre three-cylinder is carried over, but now features fuel-saving   measures such as a new cut-off system to save fuel during gearchanges, improvements   to the fuel-injection management, the use of low viscosity oil for less   engine resistance and the fitment of an exhaust gas recirculation system and   cylinder block water jacket spacer to increase efficiency. It develops 68bhp   and is capable of 56.5mpg (Combined), with CO2 emissions of 118g/km.

Toyota's 1.4-litre D-4D turbodiesel engine has also been upgraded. Power has   increased slightly to 89bhp, with increased torque, and it has an official   EU Combined fuel consumption of 68.9mpg (67.3mpg with MultiMode electrically   operated manual transmission) with CO2 emissions of 109g/km (MultiMode   110g/km).

A new six-speed manual transmission makes its debut with the 1.33 VVT-i and   1.4 D-4D engines. It is smaller, lighter and more efficient than the   five-speed gearbox it replaces.

Styling changes include a revised front bumper, grille and headlights, as well   as improvements to the aerodynamics. At the rear, the bumper and lights have   been restyled.

Changes to the interior include a new black finish for the centre console,   with titanium silver finish around the centre console, gearlever and   steering wheel trim.

Specifications now start with T2, which includes as standard: a   leather-trimmed steering wheel with tilt and telescopic adjustment and audio   controls, electric front windows, remote central locking, rear seats with   slide and recline function and 60:40 split-fold, Toyota Easy Flat one-touch   rear seat folding system, audio system with Aux-in connection and MP3/WMA   file playing capability, driver and passenger front and side airbags and ABS   with Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA).

Next up is the TR trim, which adds air-conditioning, electric door mirrors,   chrome detailing in the interior, a six-speaker audio system, driver’s knee   airbag and curtain airbags, and body-coloured door mirrors and handles.

SR trim adds 15-inch alloy wheels, front fog lamps, rear privacy glass, tinted   headlight covers, sports grille design, amber-lit analogue speedometer and   tachometer, a leather-trimmed sports steering wheel and special interior   trim.

The top-of-the-range T Spirit specification includes 5-inch alloy wheels,   front fog lights, automatic air-conditioning, Bluetooth, Smart Entry and   Start system and an exclusive interior trim.

 

We like: Exterior styling, build quality.
